Shorewall Logo Design Competition

The Shorewall website is in need of a makeover. Preliminary efforts are currently under way to redesign the site. However, before work can begin in earnest, a new logo is required. The competition has now concluded and a winning design has been chosen.

And the winner is …

After deliberating upon the matter, the Shorewall developers have chosen Gareth Davies' #3 design.

Please note that we asked Gareth to make some minor tweaks to his original design by moving the "breaking wave" graphic to the left of the text (primarily to facilitate its use on the website masthead). So, its appearance here is slightly different than it was when the entries were publicly unveiled on January 2, 2009. The form that you see on this page is the "final" design. Also, the plan was originally to announce the winner on January 4, 2009. However, for a variety of reasons, our announcement comes a few days late.

Thanks to Everyone

We would like to thank everyone who took the time and effort to create a logo and submit it as part of this competition. Thank you for supporting Shorewall.

Logo Guidelines

This section outlines some of the guidelines regarding design of the actual logo itself. These are not hard and fast rules. However, logos not observing these guidelines must be exceptional in other qualities in order to merit consideration.

  • No specific restrictions on color (keep in mind, however, that one of the Shorewall developers is red-green colorblind and somewhat blue-green colorblind)
  • Preferred format is SVG, to enable scaling to any size (if SVG is not possible for you, then large PNG, e.g., at least 2000 x 1000)
  • The word Shorewall should appear in the logo somewhere
  • It is desirable for the subtext iptables made easy to appear in the logo somewhere
  • The primary use of the logo will be in the website masthead
  • Optionally, a separate and smaller Powered by Shorewall or Shorewall Powered logo, in PNG format, should accompany the main logo (desired sizes are 80x15 and 88x31)

Copyright and Licensing Information

  • The artist may retain copyright on the submitted graphics
  • The submitted artwork must be licensed under the Creative Commons 3.0 By-SA license (or another license which meets the Debian Free Software Guidelines)
  • The artist will be credited with a line at the bottom of each page of the site, similar to: Shorewall logo design and Copyright 2008 by John Q. Public (the name can be hyper-linked to an email or website URL of your choosing, subject to approval by the Shorewall team)
  • If you do not wish to retain or claim copyright over the work, then copyright may be assigned to Thomas Eastep

Entry procedures

  • Create your logo(s) in accordance with the guidelines stated above
  • Submit your work via email to logo@… (with the graphics as attachments)
  • Include the string Logo design competition submission in the subject of your email
  • Include in the email at least the following information:
    • Full name (as you wish it to appear in the site credit/copyright attribution)
    • An email address at which you can be reached (if the email from which you submit your work is not one where you can be reached)
    • A statement that includes the following text: I certify that the work I am submitting is my original work. I further certify that as the creator of this work, I license it under the terms of the Creative Commons 3.0 By-SA license.
    • If you choose to assign copyright rather than retain it, then use the following text: I certify that the work I am submitting is my original work. I do not wish to retain copyright on this work and am therefore assigning the copyright of this work to Thomas Eastep.
  • If you choose a different license, the substitute it as appropriate in the text
  • If your submission is a joint submission (i.e., multiple artists were involved in the creation of the work and all wish to claim credit), be sure to include names and email addresses for all artists, and also modify the text of the statement noted above
  • If there is a problem or question regarding your submission, you will be contacted by a member of the Shorewall team
